Making Your Whitening Results Last

Whitening lightens the natural enamel and dentine of your teeth, but it does not stop new stains from forming. How long a brighter shade lasts depends largely on daily habits, so a few practical routines can make a noticeable difference over the following months.

The first days after treatment

Straight after whitening, enamel can be slightly more porous and more likely to pick up colour. Many dentists suggest a simple "white diet" during this period: plain rice, pasta, chicken, fish, white bread, potatoes, milk and water. Strongly coloured foods such as tomato sauce, curry, beetroot, berries, balsamic vinegar and soy sauce are best postponed. If you do drink coffee or tea once the initial window has passed, using a straw for iced drinks and rinsing with water afterwards helps limit contact with the front teeth.

Everyday habits that protect your shade

  • Brush twice daily with a soft brush and fluoride toothpaste, and clean between your teeth once a day.
  • Wait before brushing after acidic foods or drinks such as citrus, wine or fizzy drinks, as enamel is briefly softened.
  • Avoid tobacco, which is one of the most persistent causes of yellow and brown staining.
  • Be cautious with abrasive "whitening" pastes; frequent use of very gritty products can wear enamel rather than brighten it.

Things whitening does not change

Bleaching agents work on natural tooth structure only. Existing fillings, crowns, veneers and bonding keep their original colour, so they may look darker next to freshly whitened teeth. If you have visible restorations, it is worth discussing this beforehand, as some patients choose to replace them after whitening to match the new shade. Our treatments overview describes the restorative options available.

When to seek advice

Mild, short-lived sensitivity is common, but pain that persists for several days, sore or whitened gums, or sensitivity that worsens should be checked by a dentist. Whitening is also generally not recommended during pregnancy or while untreated decay or gum disease is present. If you are unsure whether whitening suits you, or would like a touch-up plan, you can arrange a visit through our appointments page.
