Preparing for Your Appointment and Caring for Your Teeth Afterwards

A little preparation can make your visit calmer and more productive. The days before an appointment are a good time to gather information your dentist will find useful, and the days after are when good habits help any treatment settle well.

Before you arrive

• Medical history: Let the dentist know about conditions such as diabetes, heart problems, pregnancy or allergies, especially to medicines, latex or anaesthetics. Blood thinners and some bone medications can affect certain treatments, so mention them even if they seem unrelated to your teeth.
• Previous records: If you have recent X-rays or treatment notes from another practice, bringing them or arranging for them to be sent can avoid repeat imaging.
• Eat normally: Unless you have been told otherwise, a light meal beforehand is fine. Brushing before you come is appreciated.
• Arrive a few minutes early: This leaves time for paperwork and helps you settle in, particularly if you are nervous.

If you feel anxious

Dental anxiety is common, and saying so at the start is helpful. Many patients find it reassuring to agree a simple hand signal to pause treatment, to ask for each step to be explained, or to book a morning slot so there is less time to worry. You are always welcome to ask questions about any procedure before it begins.

After treatment

If you have had a local anaesthetic, avoid hot drinks and chewing until the numbness wears off to prevent burns or bitten cheeks. Follow any specific instructions you are given, and contact the clinic if you notice swelling, persistent pain or bleeding that does not ease.
