Wedge pillows, sleep position and your oral health

A wedge pillow is a firm, triangular cushion that raises the upper body or legs at a gentle slope. It may seem unrelated to dentistry, but how you sleep can affect your teeth and jaw. Choosing the right wedge depends on why you want one, so it helps to understand the main types before buying.

Why sleep position matters for teeth and jaws

Sleeping flat on your back can let the jaw drop and the tongue fall backwards. This can encourage mouth breathing and snoring. Mouth breathing dries saliva, and saliva is one of the mouth's natural defences against decay and gum irritation. A slight incline may help some people keep their airway more open. Acid reflux at night can also bring stomach acid into the mouth, where it slowly erodes enamel. Raising the head and chest is a common way to reduce night-time reflux.

Choosing a wedge that suits you

  • Incline height: lower wedges of about 15–20 cm feel more natural for general comfort. Taller ones are often chosen for reflux or breathing concerns.
  • Firmness and foam: firm foam keeps its angle through the night. A memory-foam top layer adds comfort for side sleepers.
  • Length of slope: a long, gradual slope supports the whole upper back instead of bending the neck forward. A bent neck can strain the jaw and shoulders.
  • Cover: a removable, washable cover is more hygienic, especially if you tend to drool when you breathe through your mouth.
  • Leg and multi-position wedges: these are useful for circulation or back comfort, though they do less for breathing.

When to talk to a professional

A pillow cannot treat a medical problem. Some signs should be checked by a dentist or doctor:

  • loud snoring
  • pauses in breathing
  • morning headaches
  • a sore jaw on waking
  • worn or sensitive teeth

These can point to sleep apnoea, reflux or teeth grinding. Grinding is often managed with a custom night guard. At your next check-up, mention any sleep issues so they can be considered alongside your dental care. See our treatments or arrange a visit through the appointments page.
