Keeping Your Smile Comfortable When You Travel

Many patients plan trips around concerts, farewell tours and festivals, sometimes far from home. A little dental preparation before you travel can stop a toothache or a lost filling from spoiling a long-awaited evening. The advice below applies whether you are heading to a show abroad or simply spending a busy weekend away from Bolzano.

Before you leave

If you have noticed sensitivity, a cracked tooth or a loose crown, have it checked before departure rather than hoping it will settle. Small problems often become more painful with changes in routine, long flights or irregular meals. A routine check-up a few weeks ahead gives time for any needed treatment to be completed. You can find out more about what we offer on our treatments page.

What to pack

  • A travel toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste and floss or interdental brushes
  • Any orthodontic aligners, retainers or night guards, plus their cases
  • Sugar-free chewing gum, useful after meals when brushing is not possible
  • A note of any medicines you take and any allergies

On the road

Late nights, snacks and sugary or acidic drinks are part of many event weekends. Drinking water between other drinks helps rinse the mouth, and waiting around half an hour after acidic drinks before brushing protects softened enamel. Try not to skip your evening clean, however late you get back.

If something goes wrong

For a lost filling or broken tooth, keep the area clean, avoid chewing on that side and seek local dental advice if pain or swelling develops. Swelling of the face, fever or difficulty swallowing should be treated as urgent. Once home, contact us so we can assess and repair the problem properly; practical details are on our patient information page, and you can arrange a visit via appointments.
