Dental Care During Pregnancy and After Birth: What Expectant Mothers Should Know
Pregnancy brings hormonal changes that affect the whole body, including the mouth. Higher levels of progesterone and oestrogen can make the gums react more strongly to plaque, which is why many women notice swelling, tenderness or bleeding when brushing. This is often called pregnancy gingivitis. It is common, but it should not be ignored, because untreated gum inflammation can progress and become harder to manage.
Is it safe to see a dentist while pregnant?
Routine check-ups and professional cleaning are generally considered safe and helpful during pregnancy. Many dentists find the second trimester the most comfortable time for non-urgent treatment, because nausea has often eased and lying back in the chair is still easy. Urgent problems such as pain, swelling or infection should be treated whenever they arise rather than postponed. Always tell your dentist that you are pregnant and which medicines or supplements you take, so local anaesthetic, X-rays and any prescriptions can be chosen with care. If you have specific concerns, discuss them with both your dentist and your gynaecologist or midwife.
Everyday habits that protect your teeth
- After morning sickness: rinse with water or a fluoride mouthwash instead of brushing straight away, since stomach acid softens enamel. Wait around half an hour before brushing.
- Snacking: frequent small meals are normal in pregnancy, so favour cheese, vegetables, nuts or plain yoghurt over sugary or acidic snacks.
- Gentle cleaning: use a soft brush and fluoride toothpaste twice a day, and clean between the teeth daily, even if the gums bleed a little at first.
- Hydration: water helps wash away food and acids and counters a dry mouth.
After your baby arrives
The months after birth are busy, and dental appointments are easily forgotten. A check-up once things settle is worthwhile, particularly if gum problems appeared during pregnancy. It is also a good moment to think about your child's oral health: wiping the gums after feeds, starting to brush as soon as the first tooth appears, and avoiding putting the baby to bed with a bottle of milk or juice. Parents can reduce the passing of decay-causing bacteria by not sharing spoons or cleaning a dummy in their own mouth.
